1985’s “Septet,” which was nominated for a Grammy for “best contemporary composition,” is another fascinating stop on the long and innovative journey that Chick Corea’s prolific career has taken. “Septet” was originally conceived when the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center commissioned Corea to write a piece of chamber music for the New World Festival. This album, which has the composer accompanied by a string quartet, flute, and French horn, is the stunning result of that effort. This structured musical setting, infused with Corea’s improvisational gifts, makes for a unique departure from an already versatile body of work. Highly recommended.
