According to legend, Sly's disillusionment with progress in the Civil Rights movement, coupled with personal problems, led to a two-year delay before Riot appeared in 1971. What's evident in the grooves is that the Family Stone's sound got darker and even funkier. "Family Affair" was a monstrous chart item. Sly's hugely successful non-album single "Thank You (Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is turned on its ear here as the hypnotic "Thank You For Talkin' To Me Africa."
